Budapest or Vienna?

Vienna is classically prettier and better preserved. Budapest can look very Soviet and grungy in many areas, but is also much cheaper and generally more interesting.

That said, I think Vienna has much more of a "WOW" factor.

DH and I spent a week in Budapest for our 10 year anniversary. We loved it. The people were friendly, the city was fascinating, and it was CHEAP. We had plenty to do for a week and we stayed in a beautiful hotel - The Boscolo.. Keep in mind July can be really hot - we walked everywhere and took the subway, but we were sweating a lot and I had to throw out some clothes when I got back home. Also not everyone speaks English like other European cities - most people assumed we were German because Americans were not that common there. Food was decent - not a lot of fruit and vegetables. This was almost 5 years ago so it might have changed since then, but we liked that it was still sort of isolated - not a lot of chain restaurants or American tourists. we loved it and would totally go back again - a great city.

Wow! I don't think I've ever sweated that much to have to throw out what I wore--and I'm a distance runner so in the summer my running clothes get SOAKED!

I think it was a combination of wearing things multiple times as well as sweating in them for several hours. It was mostly t-shirts that I had to chuck - the armpit area just would not get clean!
