Claremont Colleges

It's not city, suburbs, farmland, it's city, city, city. Claremont is right next to Pomona (population over 150,000) and Upland (population 75,000), while Ontario (pop 167,000), Chino (pop 81,000), Rancho Cucamonga (pop. 170,000) and West Covina (pop 100,000) are within 10 miles in all directions. While most of the offerings are in LA, these cities are home to famous malls like Ontario Mills and Victoria Gardens, and annual events like the LA County Fair.

None of the places mentioned will have any interest for a college student (except Ontario's airport).

Actually, they do, like the places and destinations listed above. The LA County Fair is in pomona, there's a famous music theater there, and there are large malls as listed above. Students do go to those places. And there are also chains like IKEA, Bed Bath and Beyond, Target, etc and a number of good local eats. The location is much richer than any other LACs have. Claremont is not in the middle of nowhere.

No, but it's in in the middle of utterly boring suburban sprawl. The County Fair is three weeks in September -- not an ongoing attraction. Moms may feel that it's great there's a convenient (if you have a car) Bed Bath and beyond, but that's hardly a lure for college students.

I think highly of the Claremont Colleges and know know da who have been very happy at a couple different ones, but let's be realistic about what social life and entertainment options look like. They'll be campus-centered and/or take advantage of great weather and good places to hike, bike, rollerblade, etc.
