Road trips with dog and kids

How big is the dog? Can it fit into a purse to go into the bathroom? I have been reported to the police when leaving my dog unattended at rest stops for 5 minutes. It's ridiculous really. The last time I had the sunroom 100% open and it was only 80 degrees. (I realize a dog could die in 80 degree weather, but not with windows open and for a short time).

Thanks for the ideas.

Dog will be bout 6 months and won't be able to do doggie daycare since she won't be fixed until closer to a year. So it's really just an issue for this summer until she can do daycare.

And yes the trip is to my moms house and she is cool with the dog.

She will probably be about 25-30 lbs at this point? Maybe I can shove her in my big LL bean tote?

When I have done this with a big dog and two kids alone, I walk the dog in and glare at people who dare to mess with me. Yes, the sign says no dogs. But fuck it. I won't kill my dog and I won't risk my kids and I make sure to go through a drive through for food so there is no tainting of food. If you make it super fast (like, go in the family bathroom!) no one will look your way.

If you have a tiny dog, even better. Stick her in that big tote and walk in confidently.

When I got a little less worried about the dog, I would leave the car running, he would be in the front seat, and the car would have keys in ignition. This is epically stupid on my part, but he would literally kill anyone who tried to steal him or the car. So...I figured for 5 minutes, he was probably ok.

On the NJ turnpike, though, with a 25# puppy, I would go with option 1. Good luck!!
