This is not a race. This is a building. You want her to understand what she is reading and be excited about it. You want her to learn to read. Lots of these games train the kids to read. There is a difference.

What is the difference? Well, when you train a child to read before they are ready the child can read and that is all. When you read to a child, talk about what you have read, ask questions, and the child is developmentally ready to read then the child understands what he is reading and will therefore learn from what is read.

But why can't a kid 'train' to read and then learn the other stuff after?

And who says early reading and early reading comprehension are mutually exclusive? Are there studies that show kids who read early are worse at reading comprehension?

I agree that it's bizarre. What makes a kid 'ready' to read. We taught both of our two older kids to read before K. They are in MS now and still love to read. Not sure what the PP is talking about.
