I agree that girls need support in the early grades as well, but I would also say that for many young women, high school is the time when things go fully off the rails, and at least in my experience, the presence of males has a fair amount to do with it. I think that spending all day in an environment dedicated to empowering young women would be beneficial for many young women.

Also, I don't appreciate your language ("those girls"). If you mean "poor black girls" why don't you just say "poor black girls"? You sound like just as much of a jerk either way.

Disagree, the girls are not struggling that much to warrant tax payer money creating a separate school! Now if you want to create a private school, go right ahead!!!

I would support this if there was truly rigorous academics (AP classes etc).

Hmmm. There are already many AP classes at every DCPS high school.

Can the poster from Girls Global Academy tell us if you are a new and independent organization or if you are connected to some network of schools? And, who are your founders? There are networks in existence - and all sorts of charter school founders - and I really do not want to have to show up at a meeting just to find out that this is part of a charter school network that I have concerns about and would not support. Thank you.

@20:14 Not a member of the founding group, but can confirm that they are not affiliated with an existing charter in the city or a national charter management organization. They are a new, local start-up group.

Good Morning,

I am the OP and the previous responder to your concern about charter affiliations is correct. We are not affiliated with a charter management organization or with any existing charters in DC. The co-founders are two teachers who have 40 years of experience with a diverse populations of students. We also bring a wealth of experience with both Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate.

Our goal is to submit a thoughtful charter school application that takes into consideration the needs and desires of the potential girls (and their parents) we will serve.

Thank you.

So fall 2018 or fall 2019?

Our initial trajectory was to open in 2018. We will submit our charter application in August of 2017 and if approved (crossing fingers) conduct development for 1 1/2 years to open SY 2019-2020. We really appreciate the dialogue on this forum and look forward to meeting families and community members in the near future.

Good Afternoon,

This is the OP. We are here at Lamond-Riggs library branch today 2/25/17 from 3:30 pm-4:30 pm and will be at the Benning Road library branch tomorrow from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

If you have an interest in participating in our focus groups and cannot join us during either of these times, then please feel free to email us at girlsglobalacademy@gmail.com

We can also schedule additional sessions during weeknights and in additional locations, if that would be helpful.

What does community mean to us? Our school and the community are inextricably tied. We look forward to rich dialogue.
