Freshman Year GPA 3.38

As for you, OP: My son had an awful freshman year. I was told by many that schools know this happens a lot to Freshman. Cal schools don't even look at the Freshman year grades. Your child is definitely heading in the right direction, and there are good schools that will take your kid. He just needs to make sure the trend continues.

Please remember that a lot of people posting here are loony tunes.

+1
OP, your child will be fine. Unfortunately, my child had really good grades freshman and sophomore years, but has now tanked in his junior year. I'm thinking things will not be fine for him and it makes me so sad. He's just been having the worst year.

There is a public four-year VA college for any kid with that GPA and it sounds like yours is on an upward trend. Probably not headed to UVA or William & Mary, but there are a lot of schools out there. Outside of DCUM where kids are locked up and punished for getting an A-, those are pretty good grades.

Unless there is a serious look, all of the schools that you mentioned are significantly out of his range.

Hers are: Pre HS
Alg. I honors: A-
Geom. Honors: B+

HS:
Alg II Honors: B+
Band: A
Latin I: A
PE: A
English 9 Honors: A-
Biology Honors: A
World History Honors: A

Soph. Year (so far)
Band: A
Latin II: A
AP World History: A
Pre Calc: A-
Chem Honors: A
English 9 Honors: A
PE: A

So, if she keeps this up, she will have a 4.15. And her PSAT score are 1310. And that may not be good enough for UVA or W & M. Va Tech yes. JMU will be her safe school probably.

You are an awful person. Why do you feel the need to post such details of your child's grades, which are clearly good and much better than OPs. How is this information going to help her? Or is this just your sick way to feel superior? I feel bad for your kid having a parent like you.

What are your DC's ECs?. With those grades, she could get into UVA and W&M if she had good EC's.

Right now he GPA for this year is 3.67 for his Sophomore year.

The lack of Honor's courses is more reflective not being able to attend UVA, Tech or JMU. Is he taking any this year?

UVA - no.
ODU - solid maybe
VIRGINIA TECH - big, big reach, even if you have a parent who went there
MASON - sure.

Better start looking out of state, OP. He's a shoo-in at most non-top-tier out of state universities.

What's his extracurriculars like? Even without knowing those, I'd say his chances are very high for both.
