Other parents have school anxiety and I don't...

Op, I was your fan until you felt the need to emphasize - we attend church.

Would you feel the same if the OP emphasized that they attended a mosque or temple?

I think that is unfair and unnecessary. I'm an agnostic, but I recognize that church (synagogue/mosques) provides an important sense of structure and community to some people. I took it as OP commenting that they spend time together as a family at church. FWIW

Sounds like TJ High

OP - I meant that we have a regular group of people in our lives who hold certain values and there are kids of various ages for our kids to play with. There is also a lot of education about how to be a good person. And we are agnostic too - it's a UU church.

Like the OP we also moved to MD from CA a few years ago. The public schools seem great, and despite the GS ratings nonsense, adjusting for demographic differences most schools seem comparable. My advice - ignore all the winging on DCUM about FARMS and focus on your kid.

Yes, I'm another FCPS parent and it does sound like TJ. TJ is a fine school, OP. And FCPS is a gem.

OP - yes this is the school. Not sure why people are freaked out by it and willing to move homes which to me is a huge upheaval. Thanks for the reassurance.

I have a good previous connection to TJ. It was a great school--still might be. However, there has been a clear effort in FCPS to segregate, which degrades the entire county system. TJ has suffered because the efforts to segregate have been largely only SES lines.

OP - FCPS segregated? How exactly?

I don't know if it's fair to say that there has been a "clear effort" to segregate. Honestly, it's all the new construction throughout the rest of the county that is pulling UMC/MC people out of the city and, subsequently, those schools. When we first moved here, we really wanted to stay in the city limits but it made no sense with the elevated taxes and older housing stock (we couldn't afford Baker Park). So, we looked out east towards New Market and found what we liked and could afford. There are plenty of others who made a similar choice so schools like Oakdale, Urbana, and even Linganore are facing certain overcrowding (Urbana is in a crisis state already) with even more homes being built everyday.

OP, there are some in this county who think that any school with diversity is immediately bad. Those people, thankfully, are the minority; however, we all end up having the same conversations with them. If you like where you are, stay put. There is really no reason to leave the TJ district. Good kids who are willing to work hard get great educations in FCPS, no matter what school they go to. P.S. - wait until you see the new Frederick High School. Wondering if many will change their tunes about that school when they see what it will have to offer....

OP we also moved to MD from SoCal not long ago. The schools in MCPS are amazing by comparison.

I laugh everytime someone complains about "over crowding" which is frankly, a TOTAL LIE / JOKE.

The resources alone are amazing. That we have art and music teachers in school who teach lessons every week, and a gym teacher at all - not what we have had in the past at all.

Good lord. There are other school districts in the state.

OP you are so weird. I respected you when you mentioned being a part of your church community but that's because I understood that meant you believe in God.

OP, we are in MCPS and I think it is wonderful most of the times. The schools in Frederick County are also very good.

I have a lot of Asian friends who live there (We are Asian) and their students are thriving, engaged, learning and have a lot of opportunities. These are families who would live in a hovel in Montgomery County if they determined that Frederick County is not up to the task.

The trick is that you get involved in your child's school, volunteer in the classroom, find enrichment opportunities outside of the classrooms for the children and value & prioritize education.
