Is this name really that popular?

11:58 here. That should say Amelia is currently #68

For more fun info, see the name mapper at www.babynamewizard.com. Most recent numbers are from 2007, and it shows that Mia is#2 in Texas, #3 in Arizona, and also in the top 10 in California, Nevada, New Mexico, Florida, and Illinois. Amelia is most used in Vermont, where it is #12.

Take the SS rank with a grain of salt. Thus far, having 5 years of preschool, childcare and playgroups under my belt, I have yet to encounter a Mia. It's a beautiful name, and we would have used it ourselves had baby #2 been a girl (we would have used Amelia formally).

I also don't know any Mias at all - of any age. The girls' preschooler names that I seem to hear the most are Olivia, Isabella and Sophie.

Like Mia Hamm?

I know one Mia (5-6 years old) and that's it. She's the only Mia I've ever met.

I know a Mia who is 3 years old - she's the only Mia I have ever know or met. She lives in Ohio, for what it's worth. LOVE that name, btw!

OP here... thanks to everyone for their opinions and info! I think you've convinced me that if we love the name we should go for it and not worry too much about how popular it is (and sounds like it's not that popular locally anyway)
Thanks!

Just thought I'd add that all the Mia's must live in my neighborhood! At our small community pool, we have 1 Quinn, 2 Chloe's and 3 Mia's, and 1 Maya-- plus one pregnant Mom with an Amelia on the way in August.

I know an adult named Mia and my SIL just named her daughter Amelia, but will call her Mia. (Just between us I don't think Mia fits as a nickname for Amelia, but whatever...) So no, I would say I don't think that Mia is super duper popular.
