You could go to Manteo to see The Elizabeth II - a replica of the ship that brought the "Lost Colony" settlers to Roanoke Island. Here's a link to the park where it's located: http://www.roanokeisland.com.

Exactly, the traffic can be killer since there's really only the one main drag for most of the island, so there's no alternative routes. If there's a lot of traffic, that main drag just crawls. It took me an hour and a half to get from Duck to Manteo one day.
