OP here. Thanks for all the helpful replies! This lottery sure is overwhelming for a newbie! We'll take a look at Langley and will probably prioritize an open house visit at Garrison, since it seems like we'd have the best shot there of the schools I listed. We'll more than likely list all on our application, but it will be tough to make it to all the open houses.
I have looked at the historic data on spots offered broken out by preference, but I was hoping for more info on last year's results. Seems like a lot can change in a year. I see now that that info just isn't available, so we will make do. |
| Unless you are applying to more than 12 schools, you should put them all on your list and rank them in order. This is like the 4th year of this process - pretty straight forward. |
| Thomson takes little to no one off their OOB list-- I had a decent lottery draw with them in the first common.msdc lottery year and they basically laughed when I called to see how much the list may move/ where I was (I was in the top 20) |
I believe Thomson is still pulling IB students off the waitlist for PreK. Two spots filled this month. |
OP, what I can tell you is that last year we (OOB and not close) added Garrison for PK3 post-lottery and still got in towards the end of the summer (turned it down because of commute and because we were content with were we were). So Garrison was still a "safety". |
| What is she doing now? |
I heard Langley has gotten worst this year in the upper grades. I had a friend who had been with the school for three years and pulled their child in the middle of November. I picked her child up for her one day and students were cussing at the teacher in the lobby. |
It doesn't seem any worse to me, and I have a child in preschool there. I have never heard anything like that and I do drop and pickup every day. There is one classroom that has some big personalities, but I know the principal is implementing some changes that should help. They are using a program called Conscious Discipline which is a restorative model. |
