Why do upper middle class parents allow their teens to get B's?

Anonymous
In my opinion, parents take too much credit and too much blame for their kids' grades. I have one kid who sailed through HS with straight A's and another who struggles to maintain a low B average. Both were raised in the same middle class home, both were parented the same, given the same educational opportunities, and both are great kids with different strengths and weaknesses. I don't want to make the mistake of being too proud of the A student or too disappointed about the B student. They have different destinies on this planet.

My oldest works her tail off to keep usually straight As but has had the odd teacher that is just a screwup - grading oddly or tanking kids. (Twice she received the exact grade to the decimal on an essay to bump her average to the next lowest lettter grade - no rubric, no comments, no markings, nothing to indicate how the subjective grade was decided on) Whatever. My kid has an awesome attitude and a self-motivated work ethic and that's what will make her successful in life. I think she's too hard on herself but I'm just the laid back parent!

I know lots of rich people who weren't great at school. You can't make anyone do anything.

Was this answered?

Which HS?
A or B in liberal arts vs. STEM?
Is AP/IB considered?

Why worry about other people's children? You take care of your kids, Tiger Mom and we will take care of ours. Thanks!

I watched my child's graduation of approx 500 kids mostly upper middle class. There was 14 with straight As. Just FYI OP

Yes, if your child has less than an A, it must mean that the teacher is a "screwup." Right. You are doing your child no service by teaching them this attitude.

I can kind of see your point OP. Just read the thread in one of the school forums about the honor roll. Seems like plenty of chances to bump your grade up with retakes in public schools plus they have an easier grading scale than private schools.

Because if the buuises show when you beat your kid for the B+, some nosy nanny state teacher gets all upset and calls CPS.
