Yes, that it was 100% European
I have darker skin and other features that make me think there is something other than "white", even from long ago. Nope! |
Curious why people chose the company they do.
I have an Ancestry.com account, so for me I see the benefit of that company. But I wonder if 23andme has a greater number of participants. I don't think the two link up yet to share and find people, right? |
No, he is Ashkenazi. Almost all of his Ashkenazi friends have the result, like 95% of the DNA is from Canan. |
Part North African. |
Canaan Ashkenazi, Sephardi, and Mizrahi all came from there at one point: http://www.cell.com/ajhg/abstract/S0002-9297(10)00246-6 |
I'm more African than I thought I was. Being black American I assumed because of slavery I would have some European admixture. I did but not as much as I thought.
I'm happy to find I'm blacker than I though. |
I did my original testing years ago right when National Geographic started with the National Genographic project. Through them I found FamilyTree DNA and our of that, 23 and Me, and Ancestry, Family Tree DNA has been the most accurate. I tested all three bc my mom was adopted. They also started mitosearch where people who tested with all companies can submit there raw data and find genetic cousins that way. I have found many of the people who use FamilyTreeDNA also are very serious about genealogy and are very knowledgeable. It is pricier and takes a bit longer to get your results, but in my opinion, it's the best and most accurate out of them all. If price is a factor, I would go to 23andme next. |
I picked 23andme for my husband because it includes % of Neanderthal |
I was expecting more of a surprise with mine. I used Ancestry DNA. Both my parents are Polish and I was curious if my ancestry was Polish/ Eastern European or other European. My results were pretty much close to 100% Eastern European. The interesting thing is that I am more Eastern European that the majority of current Eastern Europeans because my parents and their families left Poland so long ago and the current population is much more mixed now.
I do have a friend who convinced his sister to do 23 and me with him. It turned out that he had no genetic link to his sister and he came to the realization that his father was not his biological father. He set off on a quest to find his real father and through the results of 23 and me actually found some of his biological relatives. Sadly his father was long deceased. |
Aren't you all creeped out by sending your DNA away to someone else? |
NP here. Not at all. My family didn't register our names with ours so only we know what our results are. |
Many of my relatives from Eastern, Central, and Southern Europe are quite tan with wide noses. I don't think you're unique in this. |
Ha! |
I heard that these DNA kits are scams and really unreliable... |
Yes that is true. I knew frok records that my families lived in Scotland, France, all over Scandinavia, and England. But wondered if a Jewish or Persian or Indian ancestor had located there from elsewhere--or something happened off the record. Or if the 50% of unknown records tracing back to the colonies had any Native American or African. Based on how I look, you might think something. Since the test, I have learned more about Scandinavian people who, though you typically think of very blonde, are almost dark-black hair and tan skin. |
