Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath - anyone? wow!

^^^^ What! Rabisi is married to Beck??

To the other PP, now I really have to watch Going Clear!

I wonder if Cruise or Travolta ever tried to recruit Oprah. From what I understand, they're all good friends. But what do I know!

Really, all, you NEED to watch Going Clear, and it will blow your mind! Especially since it seems like people on this thread are surprised that anyone would choose Scientology as an adult--several of the people profiled in GC discuss how they came to join. They give very plausible explanations. I think it was the filmmaker Paul Haggis who said that he was drawn in by the self-improvement aspect, and was impressed that the beginning of each course began with the message that if what you learn helps you, go with it, and if it doesn't, discard it. Leah Remini's show refers to "interrogations," but in GC it's explained that they are "audits," and are presented more as therapy. Several ex-members said they looked forward to the sessions because they were cathartic. It's only later on, if you've been targeted for questioning the group, that it becomes more dirt-digging. It sounds very empowering in the beginning. Couple that with the social aspect, making friends who are all Scientologists, and it kind of seems like a fun, elite club to be in. Of course, most of the people in GC joined pre-Miscavige. I can't imagine who would join it as an adult now.

I don't know what Going Clear is either but I've been watching the Remini show. I too think it's interesting - I also can't even reconcile Remini's character on King of Queens with her persona here. Did she marry her husband while a Scientologist? Was he one too? Does she have kids? I know nothing.

As others have mentioned, the "Going Clear" documentary is excellent. It is based on a book by Lawrence Wright (who is featured in the documentary) entitled "Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief". The book is far more detailed than the documentary, and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who was fascinated by the documentary.

Someone on another thread mentioned the book by Jenna Miscavige Hill, niece of Scientology's leader, David Miscavige, as worthwhile read. If the subject matter of Leah's show is of interest, I would also recommend "The Unbreakable Miss Lovely" by Tony Ortega. It's about Paulette Cooper (who wrote a book on Scientology in the early 1970's), and the church's mission to discredit and destroy her. What they are capable of is truly frightening.

The bolded sums it up. People are drawn in by 'passing' their audits, advancing up, feeling awesome and self-actualized and welcome... so they keep paying for more courses... at some point when you are paying enough money, and more $ as you advance through levels... they start auditing around any 'problem' (for the church) areas and it's kind of like a groupthink or stockholm thing where you want to gain approval so you are willing to go through all that and pay the even bigger money as you advance. Calling you on your sh!t/ aka auditing enables the church to learn your dirty secrets in order to blackmail/support/protect/help/(however you see it) - you.

Hats off to a religion started on a bet! Asimov, Heinlein, Hubbard, and Herbert know Hubbard won that one.

Well, Going Clear did that.

So nice to see Leah can revive her career with something worthwhile.

why so nasty PP?

Not being nasty at all. She joined a cult to further her acting career. She's now outing the cult to further her acting career.

Her stepfather got her and her family into the cult when she was little.

Yup, she was a child when she joined, but an adult when she hosted galas for Scientology and defended the "religion." In 2005 responding to criticism of Scientology during an interview on CNN, Remini said, "If somebody is going to get turned off about something because of what they read or heard, then that person's not smart enough to even enter a church. If you're really against something, then know what you're against.

She left the church in 2013.

I would not, for a minute, discount that this cuckoo cult has people whose entire jobs are to troll Internet message boards looking for any thread to reply on, to be the voice of dissent and discredit Remini, then of course vehemently deny it.

based on what I watched last night, I don't doubt it at all!

Freaking horrifying. Any organization that has Charles Manson as a member, is exactly what I would want to be a part of!

Seinfeld in Huff Post - I wonder what he means by the "good technology."

I last really studied, oh, it’s almost 30 years ago. But what I did do, I really liked, in terms of it’s very...it was interesting. Believe it or not...it’s extremely intellectual and clinical in its approach to problem-solving, which really appealed to me. I actually got to it from my auto mechanics teacher in high school, who was into it, and he was telling me about it. In my early years of stand-up, it was very helpful. I took a couple of courses. One of them was in communication, and I learned some things about communication that really got my act going.”
“It was just things about understanding the communications cycle... Even the volume at which I’m speaking now is the right volume for where you’re sitting. I’m almost performing, in a way.”
...
“They have a lot of very good technology. That’s what really appealed to me about it. It’s not faith-based. It’s all technology. And I’m obsessed with technology.”

Apparently, he didn't face his demons during the 150 hours of "auditing."
