You and your kid are/were lucky. I have a 3.5 year old who will absolutely not sleep anywhere and if he slept in the same room as us would be up about 100 times a night. We put him in a separate room with a travel toddler bed and use a video monitor. Our parents have houses similar to the OPs...we clear everything out of the room that's not heavy furniture.

Shrunks travel bed. Easy to set up, comes w a pump, has lasted us 3 years already. Fits in a suitcase easily for air travel too.

Toddler air mattress. Our 3 year old rolls way too much to go in a regular bed while traveling. The air matrrsss is perfect. Low to the ground but with bumpers on each side so he can't roll off.
