Hmm. Not persuaded. But a decent read.

Never ever thought of the word that way.

Exactly. Up there with pissed off, which is ugly. We just don't say things like that.

+1. Around adults, my kids substitute ticked off, which I don't particularly mind.

Its one of those words that depends on the context, a 10 yo saying " This sucks" talking about too much homework or a rained out baseball game is fine. Telling me that " dinner sucks" after I have made it or that his little brother " sucks" is not ok.
Same as saying stupid....saying that Moco having 2 days off, then a day of school , then 2 half days, is stupid would be fine with me.....Calling a person stupid, not ok.

I don't allow my kids to say it and if kids under 12 are in my car and they say it I let them know we don't say it. We say STINKS instead. E.g., that stinks. You stink. Instead of sucks.

It's Just like kids saying SHUT UP or OH GOD. I tell my kids it's not polite for children to talk that way. Just sounds vulgar and low class to me. Others may think differently. I don't say those words around my kids because I don't want them to think it's ok.

Vulgar. Not a word that is permitted in our house.

My high school English teacher told us that the only thing that can be pissed off is a condom.

DD is allowed to say that and I don't personally care if she says it in front of me. But I've taught her it's a word bordering on a curse word and to not say it to or in front of teachers or other parents.

While not the classiest word, I certainly don't care of it is used around me.

I think its definitely of prurient origin.

When I was in middle school in the 80s I remember people saying "oh no, that sucks the big one"

and there's no doubt about what "the big one" represents.

In the 80s we said "sucks wind." But I was in Catholic school, so maybe we were misinformed.

I agree with DD's friend's mom. She shouldn't be so lax with her language around other adults.

You are raising a trash talking youngster. I wouldn't welcome her friendship with my children. "Sucks," "crap" and 'oh my god' are not allowed in our house among adults or teens, much less 10 year olds.

FFS, ladies. Lighten up while there's still time.

Plenty of time to lighten up when she's an adult.
Np here, I have zero problems with adults who use profanity, and I hate when adults describe other adults as having "potty mouths". But hearing children speak that way, or close to it, just sounds wrong.
