OP here is a good summary from the New York Times.

This exactly. I can understand this from the Trumpsters, but I don't understand it from the others. |
| Anthony Weiner will flip like a pancake, he's already given over the laptop and is 'cooperating' |
I early voted, so even though it bothered me it didn't change my vote. The e-mails primarily bothered me because the limited faith I had in the media was shaken further. I can now better understand what the right wing types are driving at when they talk about the "mainstream media." Obviously Drudge / Breitbart have a totally warped version of the world, but I can no longer trust that NYT and Washington Post will ever provide me with an actual reflection of reality. I still trust them not to literally lie but I can no longer trust them to not to twist facts, purposefully omit things, hype up certain points and play down others, use selective quotations, insert editorial type content into factual reporting and even have one side of the debate literally write their paper for them. It's a problem I noticed for years and seemed to be getting worse and was now confirmed in writing. I wouldn't have put it past the political types to try to warp the debate so much, but I didn't think the upper echelons of the profession of journalism would be so brazenly corrupt / unethical. It was a reminder I need to read widely before having an opinion on anything. Also paying people to cause violence at rallies is totally beyond the pale. I actually did not expect that. Maybe I am just naive. |
Great. This is exactly what I was looking for. So not much new information but cable news anchors need paychecks so it's today's scandal of the week. I wish our elections could be decided by thoughtful discussion and not Howard Dean screams, binders of women, blah blah blah. It's just depressing sometimes. |
I also know Rubio basically said Republicans shouldn't make too much of this because what if it was their e-mails? Which was basically an admission that these are all terrible people all around. Which I suppose I already knew but needed to be reminded of. |
Sure sounds like you've been giving a great deal of though to this. |
This. Plus Trump has completely distorted and embellished the few facts we know. |
Yeah, actually, they could suggest greed. Greedy, greedy, greedy. Whether it's unethical or corrupt as a legal matter is another question. But it doesn't look good. And those emails certainly aren't helping her. |
NP. We don't know anything about the content. But per reports, officials say they number in the thousands. So you are incorrect about that. |
Not sure what the point of this post is. Generally, I am politically informed. Over the last week, I have done nothing but work, commute and sleep when possible. So thus I am generally well educated but not familiar with the latest details. I indicated as such in my post. Normally I would have just continued on autopilot through the election -- I am a transactional lawyer with four massive closings this month -- if not for the shift in polls piquing my curiosity. I am also procrastinating on a Sunday while I can get away with it. |
This is what happens, Jeff, when you idealize the people who align with your political view. while vilifying those who don't. |
I'm going to stick with confirmed information the FBI provides, and not "leaks." So our confirmed information is: NOTHING. |
Please explain? Trumpsters would be expected to become hysterical about the emails because it favors them. But, non-Trumpsters have no incentive. Why are they succumbing to panic when there is no need? |
You and others are a little confused. There are two entirely separate email issues. 1) Hillary used a private server as Secretary of State. The question there is whether this resulted in improper or even illegal handling of classified material. That's the issue that has now arisen again because supposedly there are emails which somehow may inform that analysis. 2) totally separately, the emails of the DNC and private individuals were hacked, presumably by the Russians, and released by Wikileaks. Even if you question whether it was the Russians did the hacking, whoever did the hacking committed an illegal act. Journalists etc have been poring over the leaked emails which some argue/imply demonstrate various irregularities and ethical issues in the Clinton campaign. These are the emails Rubio was talking about because today they are hacking the Clinton campaign, but tomorrow it could be someone else's personal emails. None of us have a right to see the emails of private citizens, e.g Colin Powell just because they are juicy. |
