What Schools Might Be Interested in My Child?

Anonymous
I know little about it, but these seem to kind of contradict each other. She would seem a reasonable candidate to get merit aid at South Carolina. But my guess is that if the international business school is really #1 then she will not really be competitive to get money against the type of kids that would apply to a #1 ranked program.

You get merit aid to be a big fish in a small pond. She would not be a big fish in a #1 ranked program.

"South Carolina has the #1 ranked international business school in the country. She would get merit aid there."

Update: she applied to and was accepted to both South Carolina and Miami. South Carolina gave her $78,000 in merit aid and Miami gave $58,000.

Excellent! Does she know where she is going yet?

No. She's waiting on a few more decisions.

Did she apply to Georgetown?

Why do you ask?

I remember this thread! Where did she accepted? I don't think it is weird to ask if she applied to Georgetown. It would have been a good fit for her.

What schools is your child interested in? If she's planning on college, she should be doing her own research.

I have a son at Carolina- graduating Business this May. Got the same scholarship- he is graduating with a triple major (4 years) this May.

Just a heads up the #1 ranked International Business School is super competitive. If I remember correctly, to be automatically enrolled in the program you need a 31 ACT and to have stated on your application that International Business was your intended major. That could have changed, and I could be off a number or two on the ACT.

They also have a brand new (less than 2 years old) building for the program (all business not just international) and I have to pay 600 a semester for my son to be in the brand new gorgeous building- but it has fabulous study areas, a separate food court, etc.

Highly recommend the program.

PP, Thanks. She had a 31 ACT. She has been invited to participate in several international cohort programs at the business school. She did not apply for direct admission to the business school, so would have to apply competitively once she is on campus. While she leans heavily towards the IB major, she is undecided.

She has also been invited to participate in the Capstone Scholars program. Do you know anything about this?

We will be visiting the campus the second week of April. We unfortunately cannot participate in the scheduled Scholars Social and Admitted Student Day in April because it conflicts with my daughter's FBLA commitments that weekend. So, we will do a separate visit on our own. If you have any suggestions for a campus visit, I would appreciate hearing them.

I just looked at her application acceptance. I was wrong. She did apply for the direct admission to the IB program.

Congrats on your child for getting into Capstone! It's like the Scholars program at Maryland. Most kids drop out, but it helps with the social aspect in the beginning, and they get good housing (COLA- stands for Columbia). All of the capstone kids get to stay in the coveted building for housing- COLA or Capstone. Most of the kids in Cola/Capstone housing are the high achieving social kids. It's not a party dorm but it is social. They have their own dining hall (welcome to use any dining but it's nice to have one that's close.)
Here is a link to the information on the capstone housing- Capstone and Columbia are numbers 11 and 12.

While you are there, you will want to visit Russell House- It's like the stamp union at UMD- food court, book store, etc. The welcome center (where you will check in for a guided tour) is located on the historic horseshoe. It's gorgeous and dates back to 1801. It was used as a hospital during the civil war (college shut down) and you can legit feel the history.

You will want to look at the Darla Moore building- it's state of the art. Not just the outside- look at the study rooms, cafeteria (healthy and international) and the Hootie Auditorium (Darius Rucker from Hootie and the Blowfish was a Gamecock Alumni)

A couple of side notes about the USC. My son got busted for pot in his dorm while he was a freshman. They worked with us to keep his scholarship intact- he did have to submit to 3 unannounced drug tests throughout the year, if he passed he kept his scholarship. At the end of the year, after he passed the drug tests, it was removed from his record. I was 100% happy as a parent how it was handled.

They allow freshman to have cars on campus. This was huge for my son (he has anxiety and would feel trapped without a car.)

The food plan is awesome. Lots of different choices, you don't have to pay a full meal swipe for a bagel- my son is an all day snacker and they have a plan where money is deducted for each item not each meal. They have meal swipe plans as well, but there are options for each type of eater.

There is a huge homeless problem in Columbia- the kids are safe on campus. The areas outside the campus (which is large) is sketchy in some areas, beautiful in others, just like most major cities.

I would recommend DiPratos for brunch/lunch and California Dreaming for dinner.

I will check back to see if you have any questions.

Thank you. This is all good to know. If you want to take this offline, I can give you an email address.

One thing that she mentioned to me yesterday is that the IB program is very hard and a lot of students drop out.
