Smitten Kitchen's apple cake is my go-to dessert during apple season. It's great for a crowd (I once made it at a cabin we were sharing for a weekend with three other families, and it was gobbled up), and also great for a small family to eat for nearly a week of leftover breakfasts.

This is my standard Apple Cake recipe, from David Lebovitz' and based on Dorie Greenspan's French apple cake. So simple, and yet so delicious

Although Smitten Kitchen is also excellent.

Another alternative is tarte tatin? Lots of recipes. Although it's probably more complicated than a pie.

If you are ambitious, there is also Apple Charlotte from Julia Child. A bit more complicated than the apple cake recipes but it is fabulous. Can be served warm or cold, so you can make it in advance, transport it and unmold it at the end.

Baked cartelized apples with crumble on top and then filled with mascarpone.

+1. This apple cake is my go-to apple dessert. So, so easy. I couldn't figure out what the adaptation was in David Leibovitz's version, though...looks identical to me?
