We had tried Benadryl on a previous trans-Atlantic flight and that didnt work; it jazzed up our toddler.

I believe we're probably in the small minority, but, we actually have one child who was so excited on his first overseas flight that he stayed awake all night long. really. After that we started experimenting with OTC meds.

Talk to your doc before you go about what to give the child to make them drowsy and then check it before you go so you don't have the same experience this person did.

Apparently it is quite common for benadryl to have the reverse effect on some kids.

By a third seat because it is good to be able to strap the kids into the seat instead of trying to juggle them on your lap.

Bring food your child can eat because what they have on the plane will not really work. They serve at a fixed schedule and Murphy's law is that your child will not like what they are offering!

Be prepared for a lot of walking up and down the aisles, that is what the kids seem to want to do, and on a long flight it is actually good so you don't get DVT.

This will not be the greatest experience of your life, but you will be fine!
