| We have a family laptop and a family iPad. I have a work computer that is always home with me. DH and I each have an iPhone. Kids (6 and4) each have a Kindle that they use for shows (love the built in timer), games, and having stories read to them. |
Sorry professional bias. Desktops tend to be only owned by hardcore gamers so didn't even bother list What school do you go to that has no computer work. We also want to work on keyboarding skill since so much testing is done on computers now. But it does feel we run heavy in electronics but I think of a laptop as more educational than a tablet device (scratch programming, word processing, etc) but kindle book reading sounds nice. |
Do you do personal things on work laptop? Or strictly work related. |
| 1 kid in elementary. Each parent does a lot of work at home and we both have laptops and iphones. A family member gave us an old laptop for DD to do educational/school stuff online (eg ST Math, educational reading programs) but other than that it is never used. We have 1 family ipad. |

Kid, 9:
- iPhone (my old 6) for playing Pokemon go and controlling various robotic toys. - iPad Pro. - laptop. My old Mac Pro. DS plays tournament chess and uses electronics to train, look up grandmaster games, review his games using engines, etc. Also, for homework, videos, Minecraft and other video games Kid never uses the tv other than as a screen for Wii. |
Please tell me this is a joke. A 9yr old with 3 devices and Wii? |

DH and I each have work laptops that are only used for work. We have one family laptop and one family Kindle Fire.
DH and I also each have smartphones. We actually got the laptop when DD was in 1st grade because she had online homework that our tablet couldn't run. |
Bethesda Elementary School, MCPS. I know some teachers at other MCPS schools ONLY assign math drills and stuff on the computer, which I find really sad. Children spend so much time with screens already, they shouldn't be needed at the elementary school level. They have the rest of their school years to type! Also, research has shown that taking notes by hand instead of typing increases fact retention, and there is even a small advantage to cursive rather than block handwriting. The theory is that handwriting exercises hand-eye coordination in such a way that the brain is engaged more than with typing, and therefore memorizes better in this instant. A last word on Kindles et al. As a bookworm, I really love the texture of paper and the mechanic of turning the page, even the smell of musty old books from the attic. Kindles are nice for travel, but I much prefer REAL books

Our 7 year old has 1-2 iPads spending on how you count it. (technically 3 but I gave one away recently to a relative when he got my husband year old one when I upgraded him). He has a primary one but also an older mini 2 that sucks (so no on wants to use it). He has pretty much unlimited access as he self-regulates well and rarely uses it. We don't keep the good games on there most of the time so its not much interest to him. (the device is not the issue but how you use it).
He has several computers we designated for him but he rarely uses it. He has my old mac pro and we have several other computers depending on what he wants. I'd get him a cell phone but he's not allowed to have it at school. He has an iPod for music. We have an xbox 360 and playstation 4 for the family. |

1 family desktop which is quickly becoming an issue
6 yr old--iPad mini and gen 2 iPod touch for music 9 yr old --iPad mini and gen 1 iPod touch for music Me: work laptop, smart phone and gen 1 ipad The 9 yr old is bringing home more computer based home work this year. Sharing the family desktop is becoming a time battle. I'm in the process of deciding if we get a new desktop and she gets the old one, she just gets a chrome book or I get a surface pro. |
| This thread just goes to show you the gluttony, entitlement, and overspending for the middle and upper middle class in the DC area. The difference of poverty stricken kids and yours is sickening. |
