House with a big green electrical box in yard

It's not front and center, but more to the side and back and it's not too obvious unless you know to look for it, but still, I feel hesitant. To me, it's an eye sore. DH is on the fence. Obviously, we can't hide it with bushes or anything and we'd have to be diligent about keeping the kids from playing/climbing on it when they're outside.

Plus, I wonder about electro magnetism radiating from that thing. Too low to be worried?

Is it a deal breaker?

Do you worry about the electricity in your own house? It's far closer and less shielded than the transformer.

Don't have to see it. It is a cable box. Do you think anyone would plunk an electrical box in someone's yard. Electrical transformers are mounted on electrical poles so that people cannot come in contact with them. Just like the top wire on a pole s the electrical wire and lower wires are cable or telephone. Electrical lines carry high voltage and cable and telephone lines are low voltage.

I have an electrical transformer box in my backyard now, and I grew up with one in my yard. It's maybe 3.5 feet high and 4 feet across. how do I know it's not cable? Because the electric company works on it, not the cable company.

I have no concerns about the safety. My electrician did say I get a strong amount of voltage (or something?) coming into the house because of my proximity to the box. But it's not a danger.

I would be happy because it means the eoectricity in our neighborhood is underground and not on poles so perhaps we will lose power less frequently than they do in Maryland.

Every other house in my subdivision has these. I have mine hidden behind a raised planter and I also conviently park my trash cans in front of it. My neighbors on either side get the tiny junction version to bridge between the larger boxes. Several neighbors have surrounded the large boxes with giant shrubs (trees) even though you are not supposed to plant that close. It works and I have power so I certainly wouldn't pick a house without a big giant box if it meant no electricity.

My old house had one. Kids loved to play on it. It was a PITA to mow around. No city electricians ever touched it as far as I know.

But my answer is no.

I guess you have seen it and know the difference. Doubt you do. Could be an electrical transformer, a FIOS cross connect, or a cable box.

I have one in the corner of my yard, and it's an electrical transformer. If the wires for your neighborhood are underground, they put the transformer on a concrete pad on the ground. It does produce an electromagnetic field, but it's not something I would worry about.

The box does not radiate EMR or electromagnetic radiation. It is simply an electrical box with cables connecting to your home underground. Now, about EMR. It is all around you, at this very second there are many different sources of EMR radiating on you. That is because quite frankly EMR is light. White light, red, orange, yellow, indigo, violet, LED, LCD, etc. But not only that, it is microwaves, radiowaves, infrared and UV rays, as well as x-rays and gamma rays. And although some of those words may seem scary, ex. Gamma, you cannot associate the entire types as dangerous, there are specific frequency that are dangerous which also means your microwave is not. But remember electricity is just electricity it is not EMR, also note some people may call it ER, EMF,etc but the correct name is EMR

You are right PP. Generally, these green boxes are also labelled with the cable provider's name, so not sure why the drama, particularly about an "electrical transformer." Obviously, someone who knows little about electricity or liability.

Dominion is burying the lines in my neighborhood, and is looking for volunteers to host the box. They said they need to put one every three houses.

I was just about to type this!

Undergoung electricity is a good thing OP.

We have one in our back yard and no one even notices.

I would do it for free electricity.

Why would you need to stop kids from playing on it?

The kids can't hurt it and the transformer certainly won't harm them.

I did not look at houses that had any type of electrical box in the yard. Just don't want to look at it.

Actually yes. People have green electrical boxes like this when their lines are buried. They are going to bury the lines in our neighborhood next year, and some folks are getting green boxes.

Why is it that the people who are the most certain and insulting to others know the least?

Pp is wrong. You are wrong.

Signed, someone who knows quite a bit about electricity.
