Yes it is easier, but it can be done on a phone if you are savy.

Right click image or gif
Copy image address
Paste image address
Highlight image address then click "Img" button directly below the thread title.

OP here. I am still figuring it all out but thank to you all I now have a GIF app on my phone which sorts the GIFs by category, which is exactly what I wondered. Yes, lots of fun texting them to friends yesterday - little work was done .
