Who is still waiting/hoping for a lottery spot?

Anonymous
Still waiting and hopeful. Been #1 on the wait list since August 1. But my daughter started at another school two weeks ago and it would be somewhat painful to move her at this point.

We moved from a school after three weeks when we got the call from a school we really wanted. We also hesitated because we weren't sure moving after the school year had begun was smart. Well, I'm so glad we made the jump. The process wasn't painful. It was exciting and every single day I think to myself, "we really won the lottery."

That is great, but you also might have "really won the lottery" at the first school you enrolled in. You really do not know since you did not stay. I know families that have moved their kids to a different school every year for the past few years in search of the perfect school that tailors its entire operational structure and program around their particular needs/wants/desires. From what I can tell, the kids have been fine at each school and have done fine with all the transitioning each year, but the parents have made themselves crazy with all the moving around.

We've been at 3 schools in the past four years- from HRCS to DCPS. Transition is never easy- for anyone in the family- but we are happy to have persevered to ensure that we have the best learning environment for DC. Very happy- and plan to stay with the school we are at thru 8th grade.

We won the lottery twice- once after school started- once with the lottery, both times for very sought after schools. If we had not decided to pursue Spanish immersion we would have stayed at our first school, where we remain connected to the school community.

So why don't you just take yourself off the waitlist? UGH so annoying.

that actually gives the people behind unfounded hope

But makes things happen faster if a real slot opens up. Schools have to call each person in turn, and wait 48 hours for them to say yes or no.

Not necessarily - I declined on the spot when I was called on Friday (NP here).

Yes, but they have to reach you, then submit the information. If you know you are going to decline - just withdraw your name.

+1 there is a reason they make withdrawing your child's name so easy on the waitlist. Why add work for the school?

Because the PP is selfish and inconsiderate. Thinks nothing of the greater good and only of herself.

Or because she's comforting herself with the thought that she's totally satisfied and wouldn't move if she got the call, but in her heart-of-hearts she doesn't really mean it.

anyone having any more movement from some of the more sought after schools (PK3) - MV, CMI, TR, YY, etc? we finally made it below 5 on the waitlist and just wondering how realistic our chances are?

At this point, schools might only have one or two spots open up, if that. What you need to hope is that the 4 in front of you are happy with their current solution/school and won't want to pick up and move.

Lists will creep until Count Day but only 1-2 spots likely. If you have those numbers you likely ended up somewhere great!

You never know. There was a highly desirable NwDC pk3 class that had 2 IB openings in January when 2 families moved out of the area just 3 months into the school year. Such is the nature of transient dC.

Someone just posted on MOTH that they just got off the PK3 waitlist at CHML.

We are accepting a spot off the waitlist for Stokes Spanish PK3 and presumably now opening up our existing spot at Two Rivers-4th Street. We'll also be removed from the waitlists at Stokes French (#3) and DC Bilingual (#15).
