I play around on Amazon mturk after the kids are in bed. It's not a lot of money, but it's brainless and I can do it while watching tv. No cormmitments so you can just do it at your whim. I mainly look for surveys. It's probably $30-50 a month at the level of effort I put in. I let it pile up and then use it for Christmas gifts.

I participate in a focus group, but the office recently moved to Bethesda (im in Fairfax) so it's a bit of a drive and having to arrange for childcare doesn't make it worth my while anymore.
Plus, my demographics and spending habits, etc. didn't seem to ever match up with that audience they needed a focus group for.
It may work for you though.
