Why does this same question get asked once a month on here?
|
| Trying to make your career decision based on the earning potential of a MD. Bad idea! I know couple of cardiologist and cardiothoracic surgeons with regrets. Medicine has changed. You will work your ass off for every penny. You better make sure you genuinely care about medical science and helping people or you will screw yourself in the end. |

Primary care and pediatricians make the least 150k.
ER makes 200-400k. Specialists make 200-400k. General surgeons make 200-500k. Specialized surgeons make more up to $1m+. |

Keep in mind those are national stats.
You make the most in medicine in rural areas in the mid west--sometimes many multiples more. The mid Atlantic states pay the least. |

Salaries by geographic area.

DH knows some surgeons in NYC who earn 8 figures. They don't accept insurance and VIP patients from all over the world fly to see them. |
+1, my SIL is in Daytona Beach ED.........crazy. She is 30 with no loan payments (but I think her parents floated her a bunch too so I don;t know how big they were to start). She is so damn cheap though, God love her but she looks tattered most of the time, I wish she would enjoy her earnings a little bit more and treat herself for all the nut cases she deals with! |
yeah, well there are lawyers who make 8 figures too. But the average lawyer makes something like $50K. This means nothing. |
+1 The "I know someone making $X" means absolutely nothing. There is SO much variability in physician comp, depending upon geography, type of practice, specialty, hours worked, etc... We all know someone making far more or less than the average or median. I don't know why people care so much about how much doctors make on this board. You definitely don't go into medicine for the money (much better professions for that) and there are a lot of issues with the practice of medicine these days. Both my parents were physicians and generally discouraged my siblings and me from pursuing medicine. This also seems to be the case with many other families - I know a lot of physician parents discouraging their children from pursuing medicine, unless the kids really want to go into it for the right reasons. You can make good/stable money in medicine, but you definitely don't make "f#ck you money." The doctors who make the FU money didn't earn it from practicing medicine...they started a company. Technically, this couple has PhDs and not MDs, but here's an example... https://www.washingtonian.com/2012/06/05/22-million-sold/ |
