Why don't people have water beds anymore?

My parents bought me a waterbed when I was going through school in the 90s. I never had one after high school because almost all apartment complexes prohibit them plus they are more expensive than traditional mattresses and they are a huge huge pain in the ass to move.

One of my landlords said it was as much because of the overall weight as the possibility of a leak.

Not surprising. They are super, super heavy. I think my parents still have one of the waveless ones. Noteworthy: as soon as I left for college in 2000, they drained the waterbed and put up a traditional mattress.

I did like that waterbed.

Ahh....As a child of the late 70's/early 80's, I yearned for either a waterbed or a canopy bed.

Sadly I received neither. Lol.

I had friends who had waterbeds & loved sleeping on them whenever I got to spend the night.

I still would love one, but unfortunately I live in CA where we currently have an on-going drought.

Says it all...

People are much fatter now. Would need double reinforcement. Even springs are giving way to memory foam for thus reason.

Dorm packing lists persist in reminding us that waterbeds are not allowed. Kind of like labor and delivery packing lists suggesting we bring disposable cameras and calling cards.

Nah...100% weight. A water bed, king size, is about 72x78" in area, and about 2' high. That would be 134784 cubic inches of water. Water is 62 lbs/ft^3, so the waterbed weights about 4800 lbs. My weight do not not factor in to the water bed weight.

LOL my HS bf had one in early 2000's. It was SO FUN to fool around with him on it!

My high school/college boyfriend had one in the 90's. His room was the entire basement. I spent a lot of time down there. In fact, I lost my virginity on that waterbed the Fall of my senior year. He had already gone off to college, but came home for Fall break...

OMG, this. My husband has a good friend who had a king-sized waterbed in the early 90s when we were all just out of college and everyone pitched in to help each other move. I swear we moved that goddamn thing five times.

I had one about 15 years ago. My FIL pulled it out of his basement and offered it to us. It was awesome. I am always freezing in the winter and the heated bed was wonderful.

I never slept as well as I did in my waterbed. Complete support, especially if you like to sleep on your side as I do. No aches and pains. Loved that bed. . . .

I went to an open house 2 weeks ago and they had a waterbed. And yes, the rest of the house hadn't been updated since.

My bf had one in the early 90s and damn, that was a good bed to get it on in. I had forgotten about that and this post brings back some very pleasant memories.

Really? It seems kind of squishy to get the necessary traction ...
