questions from new puppy owner--crating and sleeping

Anonymous
My puppy slept tethered to my bed at first. Mostly he slept under the bed. ? This was for the first couple of weeks he was home. After a few weeks, I crated him at night. You have to take them out every 2-3 hours at first even after you start creating. Eventually he gave me the hairy eyeball when I would open crate in middle of night to take him out so I started let him go for longer periods of time. Word of warning, when they start sleeping through the night, carry them directly outside first thing in the morning. Mine would slept through the night and when I let him out in the am, race to the back door and pee on the floor mat, while I was opening the door.

We have a poodle. We set up a small toddler pen (google iris pen) next to our bed. Put in a dog bed and a blanket next to it. He sometimes slept in the bed, sometimes on the blanket. Sometimes on the floor if hot.

He whined to go out once a night for the first week, with each night going longer until whining. He is now 12 weeks and has slept through since 9 weeks. Every now and then he wakes before 6 and I shhh him - "settle down" - and he goes back to sleep.

Definitely carry straight outside! Peeing on the mat happened once, never again! Kind of a PITA in the cold weather, a lot of fumbling around getting coat on with one arm at a time.

Have fun, totally have loved getting a puppy! He is so amazing. And a ton easier than a baby, after being terrified of coworkers telling me it was like another child. Nope. Maybe they had super easy babies.

Not OP, but thank you so much for this information, we hope to get a puppy next year.

oops...

we Skete's book, and thought I would use a dog bed beside my own at night upstairs, and keep the crate downstairs.

Anyway, good luck, OP!

I think it depends on puppy's behavior. I would never leave mine (10 weeks old golden) outside of the crate overnight. He constantly chews things every moment when we're not watching him. It might be very dangerous for him. So, crate it is for now. He cried couple of nights, and DH sleept on the couch in living room next to the crate. Now puppy sleeps there alone.
