Friends' Dog Is Going to Be Put Down on Saturday...

You are such a nice friend. When our cat unexpectedly died a couple of years ago, we were so moved by the sympathy cards that people gave us, and the donations to Best Friends Animal Society and the ASPCA that people made in our name.

I think bringing over something to eat or drink, and a treat for the dog - whether or not he's well enough to enjoy it - would be such a thoughtful thing to do.

As a lifelong dog lover, who has posted here many times. I love this idea. Our vet did this for us. And every birthday and Christmas I make a donation to the rescue group my dog came from. Her's was Save-a-Sato, but Lost Dog & Cat rescue, Humane Society, any will be great. That and the personal visit (where you gush over the dog) are wonderful. I say gush over the dog, because everyone believes (as they should), that their dog is the greatest, best dog to ever live.

A friend did this for me when my dog suddenly had to be put down due to cancer. I will always remember this small kindness on her part.

We usually bring a small treat for the dog if they are still eating (ice cream between small milk bones), hugs for all, then a card after noting a donation to a local rescue in the dog's name.

We have lots of dogs in our neighborhood and several had been the same age (same stages in life as our own) so, unfortunately, had to do this several times in the last few years.
