Roman holiday advice

OP, we are traveling with our 3 kids to Rome on August 4. We've been to Italy and the Med before in August, and the reports are right that it will be hot. For tour companies, we use Dark Rome, Walks of Italy, and Miles and Miles. Best advice I can give you is to avoid the Vatican museums--they will be the worst in August. Take the high speed train to Pompei from Rome (instead of a car) and it's a relatively easy day trip. Tour the Coliseum, Palatine, Forum in the morning at 8:30. Go on the Walks of Italy tour out to the aqueducts (in air conditioned comfort).

Our kids loved Venice when they were younger than yours--one cool thing that our entire family liked more than we expected was Venetian mask-making at Ca'macana.

For Coliseum tickets, should you just get the ones online or get the Roma pass? How long is the wait with regular tickets?

We use a tour company--Dark Rome--for the Coliseum. They may offer kids' tours, too, such as gladiator training, etc.

We've gone several times in March & April. If you stay away from Easter, it's perfect. Great weather and manageable crowds at the biggest attractions.

OP here just got back from Rome . It was magical . We did a ton of tours with a private guide that were kid friendly. We did a walks of Rome tour covering trevi pantheon Spanish steps piazza navona etc ; a collesieum and forum tour ; a Vatican tour with Sistine chapel and the bascilica and also a side trip to Ostia . It was great to have a guide . Each tour was about 3 hours long and in the morning . We did long after ok. Naps and quiet time followed by great dinners long walks and gelatos to keep the kids motivated . We used the company romeprivateguides.com who took care of everything and kept the kids thoroughly engaged . They even offer services in other cities . We used them in Venice for a boat tour as well . Best part about Italy - the people are so nice to kids and actually engage in conversation with them . My three year old had a blast . I was dreading an overdose of culture with y hyper active boys but they did great thanks to the friendly Italians and their high tolerance for Loud kids .
