No he is just 154 lbs and has been for a while.
He maybe gained 6 -8 lbs in the last year.

Hormone imbalance? Could happen during puberty. Maybe he'll grow some more.

OP here. I just haven't seen them with boys.

Some of this is hormonal. And DH has stretch marks from (casual) bodybuilding.

Op, it's normal. Just like some women get them starting in puberty, so do boys and men.

Please stop rubbing oil into your sons back to prevent something you can't prevent. Please leave him alone. Don't comment on it. You aren't going to change the outcome except to make him feel self-conscious. He is wondering why his mom is overthinking and overcontrolling about how he looks. You should not have focused on this in the first place, but now that ship has sailed.

My son had some on his sides (but they faded) from his height growth spurt at about 13, and on his arm muscles from weight training at around 16.

I rubbed some lotion I got in Europe throughout both pregnancies, don't have a single stretch mark. Nor do my friends who used the same lotion. One didn't think to put it on her back and she got stretch marks just on her back. Some lotions work, I don't know which ones in US, but all my friends from back in the old country are a living proof that some lotions work. Every single one who used it got no stretch marks and the ones who didn't got stretch marks.

My college boyfriend had stretch marks because he was lifting and putting on muscle. He was ripped, and I thought those marks were really hot.

Does your son lift weights?

Sorry, this is just baloney. The plural of anecdote is not data.

There is no scientific evidence that lotions/oils prevent stretch marks.

Yep, my DH has stretch marks on his back from his big teenage growth spurt too. He was really tall and skinny as a teen and they've faded but are still there. Who cares though? I bet no one has noticed but me and him.

I have a few (thin) male relatives that developed stretch marks as teenagers.

Yep, my boyfriend in college played football, did a lot of lifting, and was ripped. He had stretch marks at the side of his chest along where the pectoralis muscle attaches to the deltoid and also, when he lifted his arms, stretching from his armpits out towards the inside of his biceps. Totally hot. He also had stretch marks that were almost invisible (but you could feel them) on his back, near his waist. He had those from early adolescence, from growing not lifting, or so he said.

Some people are just prone to stretch marks.

My DH got stretch marks from rapid growth as a teen, height. It happens. They should fade from red but won't go away completely. Why is this a big deal?
