Blair as a whole school magnet?

I really hope they don't touch magnets. It's just about the only thing in MCPS that's working. I am afraid the SB idiots will mess this one too.

I'd find it hard to imagine the OP wanted to improve Blair specifically, the best school in the DCC. There are plenty of highschools that need improving. I assume OP just wants to find more seats for the magnet to address concerns found in the choice study.

OP here, yes more seats to address choice study.

It is not just more seats.. It is more seats for minority, FARMS, Sp Ed, and ELL students...that is the complicated part. They need more applicants from those categories as well as support in the programs for a non English fluent child to succeed (as an example).

Let's fix the elementary school immersion programs, that have much more obvious problems attracting URM students, first. Then use what we learn on HGCs. Then MS magnets and finally HS magnets.

+1

My youngest is at the Blair magnet and I'm breathing a sigh of relief that we got our kids through the system before they started messing with it.

This sounds like a terrible idea. Change should be viewed as an improvement for the surrounding community not harmful.

It sounds like a plan for a mostly White and Asian high school. Kinda like a down county Whitman. Even if it didn't have the effect of creating a serious racial imbalance, I can't support busing kids away from their neighborhood school to benefit other kids. Petition to build a new school, don't social engineer Blair.

Not if admissions are changed to reflect "community based norms" Blair will then reflect the county as a whole.

Blair is a whole school magnet. Check the website, and you will note that the Science and Math Departments both include statements that anyone can take magnet courses as long as they meet non-magnet prerequisites.

A number of students do take magnet courses with upperclassmen.

And there are empty seats in the classes after the magnet kids have enrolled. That is not exactly a whole school magnet.

As a practical matter, this rarely happens.

And when he says rarely he means almost never, and even then it is most likely an advanced CAP student. It isn't the Javier or Lamars of the School.

Agreed all while inundating the already struggling Einstein and Northwood schools

This will never happen. Blair pulls Takoma Park neighborhood. For those of us who live nearby, we understand that Takoma always gets what it wants from the BOE. There are neighborhoods closer to Blair (even people who are walking distance) who are zoned for Northwood so that Blair can take Takoma.

And as a parent of two magnet kids, I agree that the magnets are just about the only thing in MCPS that is working and that they need to be left alone.

But the closest high school to TP is Blair.

Magnets are the only things working in the eastern parts of the county.
