You'll need a hell of a lot more than that, Ducky.
then explain what she needs to do if you know so much.

She needs a valid work visa if she plans to work while there.

This. You will eventually get caught, and kicked out with a possible travel ban on traveling back into the UK. They keep track of visitors, even US passport holders, and how many days you have been in the UK and the break in between, so don't think you can enter Jan 1, stay for 6 months, leave for a week, come back for another 6 months, leave again for a week, come back to the UK for 6 months, etc. they will quickly know you are effectively living in the UK. consult a lawyer.

So what do I have to do to live there? How do I go about getting a work visa?

here, go to the uk immigration website and find out. Hint: it's really hard and you probably won't be able to do it. The best you can do is enter as a tourist for six months but to do that you'll need to prove you can support yourself as a tourist and have proof of exit (plane or train ticket.) There's not a country in the world where you can just pick up and move there. Some countries are more likely to turn a blind eye, like central and South America but you're still better off following the rules. If you want a change of scenery move to a different part of the USA or sell everything, get a tefl and teach English overseas for a year.

For the love of Pete google it! Go to a TEFL site and see what they say. Go to some travel sites and see what those say. Zero to travel and nomadic Matt are two great starting points as are the immigration websites any country you're thinking about visiting.

You talk to a uk immigration lawyer. This is how borders work. You can't just go live in other countries without following their rules.

Could you do a working holiday for several months without anyone noticing/caring? Sure, but it would be low level tax fraud... And if you come back and forth, you will get caught.

OP you do realise that they just had a referendum essentially about immigration, right? And they came down on the side of NO immigrants in England. Just go for a visit in the summer. The winter is depressing AF anyway.

If you are a US citizen it's hard to get a work visa. Someone asked you upstream if you had a UK passport and you didn't even get that was what they were asking.

Basically you will need to find a job with an employer willing to sponsor a work visa. Not all employers are registered to sponsor visas.

Op are you going thru some midlife crisis? How did you come up with this idea? You can't go to uk to a "cottage in countryside" without a visa and serious $$. To get a uk residency it's a big procedure. My husband is British and we have dealt with us and uk visa issues, it's not fun.

OP, this is easily sorted. Send Harry Potter a message via a barn owl and he will have a word with the Queen.

No. I'm nowhere near middle aged

That's why I asked about what the process would be

Ok, pp here. You are young, so I will be a bit clearer. The U.K. does not need people living in their country who are not contributing to their economy in a meaningful way. So unless you get a visa thru a job, (finance or academia are good) or marry a uk citizen, the only way to go would be as a tourist.

You can also apply to attend university there, as I did and see how you like living there for extended periods of time.

As someone who did get a UK work permit and lived there for a number of years, I can tell you it's not easy unless you are highly skilled and no one in the UK/EU can do your job. So OP, what do you do for work?

Ok, so how long can I stay there as a tourist? Less than 6 months?
