Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
Stop clutching your pearls, there are drugs at Cooper. Kid was arrested a couple years back for dealing in school. I can name at least two kids I know that were dealing from when my kids were there. It's everywhere, Cooper is no different. |
One kid "arrested" for selling pot years ago is NOT a "drug and alcohol issue," as either you or the PP claim. I've had kids at Cooper over the past ten years and there have been no "drug issues" except for that one incident, which was isolated. It's not pearl clutching to set the record straight.

Why the air quotes around arrested? And if 1 got arrested, you can bet a dozen are doing it and not being caught. Wake up and smell the herb. |

Cooper is not as rigorous as Longfellow, period. I've heard that the math curricula for AAP math is very different between the two schools from FCPS math teachers. Sadly, Longfellow no longer an option after this year for AAP kids in Langley pyramid.
We went to both curriculum nights for our rising 7th grader and they were as different as night and day. Longfellow gives you the feeling that they know what the heck is up with MS...couldn't be more impressed. Didn't get same feeling at Cooper at all. |
Longfellow has had longer to tailor their presentations to what AAP parents expect to hear. I assume you're opting for Longfellow, but there are no shortage of parents who've been happy with Cooper as well. |
| What is Cooper like for students who require more one-on-one attention? I've heard that they are very 'hands off', in the sense that they want the students to be more independent, ask for help, be vocal in class, etc. That doesn't necessarily work well for kids who are shy or anxious, etc. |
So if your child goes to Cooper he'll be doomed, doomed, I tell you, simply because of the math curriculum. Prepare him/her for mediocrity in life now. What hooey! |
Just recognize this is coming from one of your fellow Langley parents. |
| ^^^Most Langley parents will tell you Longfellow students are better prepared for the rigors of HS than Cooper students. |
Uh, no. I've had kids at Langley for over a decade and most families there have sent their kids to Cooper and been very happy with the preparation they've received. Longfellow is sparsely represented at Langley. |
Regarding the bolded, all middle schools are hands-off. This isn't elementary school and they're trying to prepare kids for high school. The teachers start doing this during sixth grade, to prepare them for middle school. Cooper is no different. |
DP here. There are probably at least 60 kids in every class at Langley who went to Longfellow and didn't get into TJ. |
^ So not enough to put "most" Langley parents in a position to compare Cooper and Longfellow, but not exactly "sparse" either. Just part of the community. |
So, sparsely represented is accurate. Most Longfellow kids go to McLean H.S. |
I ran some numbers for the rising 9th grade class at Langley. My best guess is that, putting aside students coming out of Cooper and Longfellow who go to privates, about 75 kids out of roughly 480 in the Class of 2020 at Langley will have come from each of Longfellow and Kilmer. Is 15% sparse? I wouldn't use that word, but otherwise we are in violent agreement, since I don't think "most" Langley parents would have an opinion on Longfellow or Kilmer. |
