Is Trump throwing the election?

Yep, that pretty much sums him up. There is no rhyme or reason to what he does. No strategy. This entire endeavor is just the outburst of a twisted mind.

So it's not really a matter of political stands, but of his childishly egocentric approach that threatens to give us an authoritarian president who puts his own opinions above the Constitution.

I really wish, though, that we could have a President who is not hated by half the country. Gary Johnson may be flaky, but part of me wants to see him win.
This is a little simplistic. If more people knew more about Gary Johnson, more people would dislike or "hate" him.

You're struggling with Bernie's crash and burn, and I get it, but I do wonder why you look to a white male Libertarian as your backup option. Is it the weed? Because that's not really a great reason.

You're right that I originally supported Bernie and like his ideas, but I am glad that Hillary got the nomination because I think she'll be better as President. You'll notice that my comment about Johnson was far from an endorsement (although you're also right that I agree with him about weed). I will work and vote for Hillary, but it bothers me that half of my fellow citizens will hate the result. Unfortunately, it may not be so much about Hillary as about the polarization of the country, where each side demonizes the other. You can see it right here on DCUM.

It seems as if a couple of years agoTrump got together with Clinton and the plan was, if Trump wins the GOP primary then after that he will take a dive by saying outrageous, loose-cannon things to hand the election to Clinton on a silver platter.

It almost appears to be a rigged match.

+100 If you ever watched the Apprentice ... Trump is a good faker.

Thing is, he has been saying the same loose cannon things in the primary. It shouldn't have worked, but he had 16 opponents who did not take him seriously enough until it was too late, and the press gave him a pass. Remember, the majority of republicans voted against him, but their vote was divided among other and the Republican primary systems overly rewards the front runner and punishes the laggards.

Johnson's position on legalizing weed is one I'm comfortable with. I'm. I'm less comfortable his apparent high level of consumption!

It's an interesting fact that Americans, including Republicans, like Hillary far more when she's holding a position than when she's seeking it. Her approval ratings over time consistently demonstrate this. I don't know if that's specifically about Hillary, about our comfort with women seeking power, or some combination of the two.

But what if Democrat operatives, in significant numbers, voted in the Republican primaries with the express purpose to get Trump elected? I do not know any conservative Republicans who voted for Trump --they all voted for Cruz. The other Republicans I know voted for Rubio. I do not know any Trump Republicans because Trump is more of a Democrat than a Republican by the things he stands for. Fiscally conservative maybe but socially liberal like most NYCers.

Most Democrats I know look at Hillary with great suspicion, and they talk as if they'll need a barf bag going into the voting booth to vote.

Not trying to be a conspiracy theorist weirdo, just trying to understand how so many Republicans voted for Trump. I admit politics is not my area of expertise.

Sorry, but you DO sound something like a conspiracy theorist weirdo, as well as someone who is generally ignorant about how primaries and presidential elections work. At the very least, your perspective sounds extremely limited.

Don't think he did it to help Hillary, he did it for his Brand and his ego. He never expected to get this far but now what?

My fear is he'll get sick of it all and step aside, letting himself be replaced by someone with a real chance of winning.

He's been talking about running for president for more than 30 years. He's not doing it for his brand or his ego.

He knows what he's doing. Reportedly he vowed to do this after Obama mocked and humiliated him at the WHCD a few years ago. This is a revenge play. He does't care who gets hurt.

well, it started saying outrageous, loose cannon things from the beginning. he told a widely recognized war hero (McCain) and he does not like people who get caught (Trump was born in 1046, so he was an adult during the Vietnam war and the draft but he never went to Vietnam that I know of, interesting to find out how he avoided the draft, maybe he was in the Texas National Guard with G. Bush), said that women who get abortion should be punished, that Mexican immigrants are rapists and other amenities like that no candidate ever said before, all this before nagging the nomination, and he still got it. so it does not seem like he is torpedoing his election, he is doing what he has been done from the beginning.

and to the poster above who said this alleged trick would say a lot about the democrats, I say it would say a lot about the Republicans, THEY voted, one by one, this guy notwithstanding it is obvious that he would be an atrocious president and that he would f**ck them exactly like he f**cked his investors in the NJ casinos, who lost 1.5 billion while he was getting rich. congrats.

I am the PP and I am flabbergasted why Republicans would vote for him. You can see I am reaching here, trying to explain it. What I wrote borders on absurdity or weirdo conspiracy theory but I cannot for the life of me understand what kind of Republican would vote for someone like Trump. I do not hate Trump, I liked his show Apprentice until disrespectful, snotty people got on and the show devolved more into contestants arguing with Trump than completing the challenges.

I am a Republican and I voted for Cruz. All the Republican I know did the same, or they voted for Rubio. Maybe I live in some small world of my own that is a subset of a subset of Republicans. I don't know. Cannot explain Trump.

I really have not followed Trump or listened to his speeches but apparently he is saying something that appeals to people. I guess I just do not have in common with the people who like all that Trump is saying. I will vote for Trump becasue i detest Hillary Clinton as I did Bill Clinton. When I vote this year it will be not for Trump but against Clinton (or Suckey Sanders if he had won)

You just answered your own question. You are the kind of Republican who will vote for someone like Trump.

And polls are beginning to reflect that.

Seems unlikely - we're talking about the defacto leader of the birther movement...
