| Retake it. Next year with the new grading will be so much easier. In addition, with the new grading which will cause serious grade inflation your child needs to improve the grade. For example, first marking period A and second marking period B is an A with no final exam! Compare to the current set up with an A first marking period, B second marking period and most likely a B (it's hard to get an A on that semester exam) would be a B semester grade. |
while 2 years may be the requirement, most colleges want to see 3 years of a language and that it is the same language so they see the progression of difficulty. retake spanish II. Many kids do this and it is not a problem. |

+1 OP, assuming your child will go to college he will have to take a language at some point. I currently teach at UMD (and before at 2 private universities) and many students struggle with college language requirements because they didn't take at least 2 years of the same language before college. On the other hand, I have advised students that didn't need to take language classes because they already earned the credits by high school and can take at least 4 classes in another area of interest. |
| NP here - My son is also struggling with Spanish 1 due to missing a lot of school. He is trying to make it up - did I understand you all that if he takes the final, his grade will count? He was planning to try to catch up and take the final and if he doesn't end up with a B or higher, then retake next year. |
We have done some research and while many colleges like a language it is far from universal. We decided it was better to drop the language then have it take tons of academic every and still bring down the GPA. Getting a B in Spanish II and then a C in Spanish III took a huge effort. All of his other subjects went up after it was dropped. |

Wow, a lot of the information in this thread is new to me. Sorry for the naive questions.
My son is taking Spanish 1A/1B in seventh grade in MCPS. 1. Will his grade in this class become part of his high school transcript? 2 He gets a grade for each of four marking periods this year. How would these be combined into a final grade? -- say he got a B,C,B,C in the four marking periods. 3. According to Edline, most of his grade is determined by "unit exams". Will there be a "final exam" that has much more significance in determining his final grade than these "unit exams"? 4. What is the best way to keep up with this sort of information? thanks, |
| Yes the grades will be on his HS transcript unless he repeats the class. He has already taken 1 final (for 1A) in January since MCPS uses semester classes. His grade would be determined by the final. If he got a B on the final (and the grade was on his report card) he received a B for Spanish 1A. If he got a C, he got a C. Same thing for second semester. The final is coming up for 1B. He should try to bring his semester grade up to a B or get a B on the final to end up with a B in 1B |
| And PS..your child likely has all this info. It is also usually covered at back to school nights in the fall and curriculum reviews in the spring..and DCUM of course |
| Spanish teacher here again- if your kids are struggling to study for their Spanish 1 / 2 finals, one relatively effortless thing you could get them to do would be Quizlet flashcards (that other people have already made). For example, today I typed into google Realidades (name of the textbook program) and the name of a Spanish 2 unit ("las emergencias")- and tons of flash cards with pronunciation and everything came up. In my opinion, strong command of vocabulary gets kids the most mileage on the finals. |
| This is the last year for final exams, right? |
