Can you elaborate? |
RH is large but it is an excellent school with a very involved parent community. It is more economically diverse than Somerset which some might consider an advantage and some might consider a disadvantage. |
I love somerset too. Its finding an acceptable house in that neighborhood that is a challenge.
Couple of things i've heard is that schools in moco with strong student bodies tend to have higher teacher student ratios. Thus schools in silver spring might have better ratios than chevy chase perhaps because the resources are needed elsewhere. If you look at the "at a glance moco schools" document it generally seems to support that. Also Somerset goes k-5. RH is k-2 but schools it feeds i believe at 3-6. There are advantages (or personal preference) to keeping your kid in elem school format as long as possible so i think this is an advantage of Ch Ch elem and North Chevy chase schools. |
My child was at Somerset ES. The school is great, teachers are nice and professional, but... they are very test-oriented. The kids are basically have only math and language arts all day long.
We took our child out of it, because we found a school with a more balanced approach |
Thanks for your thoughts on this. I would be curious to hear from other parents on this very issue (testing, focus on math and language arts to the exclusion of other things). |
OP here: Where did you decide to send your child? Was it private or to a different public school? Thank you. |
This is true at all MoCo elementary schools, and is the main we reason we chose private. |
MoCo has a few arts integration programs (Potomac Elementary, Kensington Parkwood Elementary, and Charles R. Drew Elementary)--they still have the testing demands of the other schools but also have some extra depth and focus in integrating the arts and music into the curriculum. |
