Help, I just found out that I am moving to DC in August!

If inspired teaching is feasible for you, you could also consider Langley. It'seems an up and coming school with a great principal.

I second Langley. And, more generally, do take a closer look at the inbound school your address feeds into. Run it through the online school locator system to make sure you've got it covered right with the new boundaries. Don't rely on your past experience, even if it's from a year or two ago, things change quickly around here. And then take a detailed look at that school. "It's not very good" doesn't mean anything. Are the students not? The teachers? The facilities? It your child generally does well in school, you may be pleasantly surprised. Seek a conversation with the principal and ask specific questions about the curriculum, the routines, particular challenges, test scores. And ask for a couple of parent contacts. If the teachers are solid, then your child will be fine. Having the school nearby, will save you trouble and help smooth your return to DC by a lot is my prediction (it certainly did for us when we returned).

Langley for a 3rd grader? What are the PARC scores? And the 12% suspension rate?

Here's the 'schools with space remaining list' - it is supposedly updated weekly. http://www.myschooldc.org/find-schools/available-spaces/

Scores are normal for the demographics of the school. Dont know about the suspensions. Imy not saying it's great, but if OP is going to find a spot this late, good test scores will be very hard to find. Langley has a strong science curriculum and a newly active PTA. Great building and lots of fun extras like bees and a tarantula. OP should get on the list just to keep the option open.

Last year you probably could have gotten in for 3rd at Shining Stars... This year, I dunno.

Doubtful that you can get in without previous montessori experience and the lower elementary is typically oversubscribed with like 30 kids.

You've got a good shot at Bridges, I bet. And that won't be too tough of a commute.

Why not enroll your kid in the assigned IB school? What am I missing?

You did say you didn't like the neighborhood -- where you nevertheless will be sleeping each night -- but you didn't say anything about the assigned school, its teachers, the facility, etc. You just told us you got bad waitlist numbers for other schools.

No - she said the assigned neighborhood school was not very good. No comment about the neighborhood itself.

Yes I would call Bridges today to express interest and see what they think your chances are. I bet they're good. This is a good school.

You may want to check out St. Anthony's in Brookland (Catholic School). It has a good reputation in the neighborhood and is quite affordable.

If you're willing to go to Brookland, I'd also agree St Anthony's might be an option and the DCPS John Burroughs could be a good possibility.

Definitely consider Langley. I bet there is space in upper grades. A neighbor moved inboundary in midyear last year so Langley was her only option for her 1st and 3rd graders and she was happy.

The 'space available' list for Langley only shows spots for PK3 and 5th.
