When to stop crating puppy

Anonymous
Crating isn't only for potty training. If you can 100% trust your pup to not chew/destroy anything or not get into anything that wold be unsafe AND he is no longer having accidents than OK to not use anymore.

Why would you stop crating ever?

Would you like it if you spend 50% or more of your life in a cage? Didn't think so....

I'm a cat person, so pardon the stupid question. Do people really leave their dogs in crates for 8+ hours a day? No food, water, no way to play? This is...ok?

Sorry, "found"!

Our boxers were in the crate until three - most puppies can be trusted not to have accidents after 9 months (some as early as 3-5 months for easier breeds)

The boxers had to be crated when we weren't home because they would destroy things and potentially hurt/injure themselves.

Why not leave the puppy in a play-yard/x-pen/play pen with water, pee pad, and toys? Given it's a small-breed dog, you could easily do that instead of using a crate. I mean, seriously, could YOU hold it all day if you were in a CAGE? Crates are old school, people. My friend is a dog trainer and sees a lot of dogs with issues that started when they were puppies and were crated all day. It's not even just the crating--it's the lack of mental and social stimulation all day. I can't believe how many of you find crating acceptable! Don't get a dog if you can't afford a dog walker or doggie day care and if you're gone all day.

Read Ian Dunbar's books and website to understand crating responsibly. He also suggests an x-pen for parts of the day, but a crate is a very necessary part of training your puppy, especially if you want them peeing outside only, NOT in their pen/crate.

We got him from DCPups in Fairfax. Was easy process and puppy is great. There are Cavachon facebook groups and can also find on puppyfind.com.

Don't feel guilty! Even after being housebroken, a crate keeps a dog safe from chewing things when you are home. A puppy will chew on and teeth for months - often until 12 months of age. We came home to a GREEN pawed golden retriever after he found a green pen and chewed it to smithereens - and of course he was doing this on a rug which was light blue...also, he chewed on a ridge in the carpeting and ripped a hole in it.... that's when he went back into crate when we weren't home. Bored? Hey, let's find something to chew on for fun (or wait for the CAT to push something onto the floor - I'm sure they are working together on this).

I would recommend you keep the crate, if you have the room, even after your puppy is trained. Our older dog had his crate from when he was a puppy, and it was a place he could retreat to and feel comfortable when he became older and sick. Especially if you have kids it is good to give them a place that is all their own. Our own puppy is just about trained, but we're going to try the same with her.

We adopted our pup from Glen Eden last year. Really nice people with a good reputation in the dog and horse worlds. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to friends and neighbors (and we have). They also breed Goldendoodles.
