For me, it was important to adopt a pet who had been fostered in a home, so I'd be able to know more about how they behave in a home. We got our first cat from Homeward Trails and our second from Lucky Dog and I feel like we got a lot of information about both of them ahead of time. With the second cat, she was fostered in a home with kids, cats, dogs, and stairs, so we knew how she was doing with all of that. Even then, they agreed not to deposit our check for a few weeks til we saw how our first cat responded to a new one. My suggestion is to find a pet who's being fostered by someone who has had lots of different animals in their home.
