We did this too. We skipped the cake cutting all together too. But if you want to do that, just get a small white cake from anywhere to cut. |
+2 We had a small cake to cut (that we used as a topper) and then the guests got cupcakes (and other desserts). |
| We had our reception at a restaurant and they made the cake and rolled it into the per person cost for dinner. It was beautiful and delicious and ended up basically not costing extra. Not sure if where you're having the reception but that's a potential option. |
| Go to Giant and order a sheet cake with white icing. Their cakes are delicious. |
| A small cake for cutting and then serve cupcakes? We had cupcakes at our wedding. We deliberately over ordered from our fav. cupcake food truck and 4 years later, people still mention how good those cupcakes were. $350 for the whole lot of them. We ordered about 130 cupcakes for 80 guests. |

I ordered a stacked/tiered sheet cake for my parents' 50th last year.
Full sheet cake on the bottom, quarter sheet cake on top. The quarter sheet had a photo on it, and the writing and flowers were on the full sheet around it. It was beautiful, fed 110 people, and cost about $150. Congrats on your wedding! |
| We had 30 people at our wedding and just got 2 different kinds of your run of the mill, order off the menu cake from a local bakery. They were prettily decorated, even if they weren't "wedding cakes", and it only cost us $40 for some really delicious cakes. |

I baked my own wedding cupcakes, swear to God. 120 of them (for 90 guests). My poor aunts were frosting them on the morning of the wedding.
If you want to go really cheap, there's your answer. |
| We got a small cake to cut and cupcakes. A sheet cake is a great idea, but since we DIY'd much of our wedding and didn't want to stick someone on cake-cutting duty, the cupcakes were simpler. We went with Sticky Fingers Bakery, and they did a great job. |
| I got my wedding cake in 2013 from Edibles Incredible in Reston. I'm pretty sure you can do a buttercream frosting cake, at your price point, if you pick it up yourself. My cake was 100 servings at $4.25 a person, but I had three tiers, three flavors, and an ombré design, so it might be even less for something simple. Also, they do a free cake tasting with three full pieces of cake! |
| Try Heidelberg in Arlington. My sister used a grocery store for her wedding cake. Safeway does good cakes as does Wegmans. See if they do wedding cakes. |
| We did a Baskin Robins ice cream cake. I think it was $50-60 for a really large one. Everyone seem to like it. |
| Wow. The quotes you get seem really expensive. I got married in NYC 7 years ago, and got a wedding cake (non fondant) for 50 guests from a no name bakery on the lower east side for $200. I'd expect it to be more now, but not 3 times as much ... |
We ended up buying many smaller cakes instead of one wedding cake and it was about half the price from the same bakery. Everyone liked the choice and many had small slivers of each kind. it was a hit. |
| Seriously, everyone loves the sheet cakes from Costco. They are delicious. Go with that... |
