I turned the weaponized incompetence thing against my husband.

It used to be that he would do a terrible job knowing that I will either finish or completely redo it. One day I just said to myself no more. If he swishes water in the salad bowl and claims he washed it, he will be served salad in a bowl with a day old stuff stuck to it. If he hits his alarm clock and falls back asleep in the morning, I am leaving for work and letting him wake up hours later with a screaming kid in the house going bonkers because they are late for school. A few months of that, and he shaped up real fast.

It got better in the sense that he went from being angry and controlling to us coexisting pretty well. I'm not scared of him anymore and I don't spend a lot of energy trying to manage his feelings because otherwise he'd take it out on me. He also now does more than his share at home, and he has hobbies and friendships outside of me.

It's still not a marriage a lot of people would want.

Our kids went to college and my abusive MIL (who was local and DH cared for) died... we got much closer and became our old selves once life became less complicated. It's not that we didn't love our kids but they took up a lot of time and energy ...we are best friends as empty nesters and I'm so glad we waited it out.
