Anyone start at a DC Charter, then go private?

Let's just say that some charters are better in the lower grades. I know of several families who left Cap City for private school after 5th grade. They thought things deteriorated after that.

I'd definitely choose E.L. Hayes over HD Cooke.

Another vote for this.

Oh my, yes, EL Haynes all the way. HD Cooke isn't even in the same universe. We know about 15 families at EL Haynes and all are very pleased.

OP.
I'd try to track down parents in the higher grades to get a sense of what private schools students have gotten into from Hayes. I don't know the school or its track record as far as privates go.

We started with a charter and will probably stick with it, unless Walls is an option--and then we will evaluate that choice with our child. I also think that when it comes time to apply for college, they may look favorably at this generation of charter children--those who perform and test out well may have an edge on their independent school peers?
