What is your kindergartener actually reading/writing?

I would worry less about the reading and focus on writing. They do a lot of basic writing in 1st and the focus is on getting kids to get anything they can down on paper even if the spelling is wrong and punctuation and grammar is screwed up.

So your child should not freeze when confronted with a writing prompt but be able to sound out basic thoughts. For example? What are you thankful for?
"I am thankful for mi fahmulee and toyz" would be acceptable. They also work on having them find and copy words that are in the prompts or on the walls to use in sentences. In the example the child should be able to take the world "thankful" from the prompt and reuse in the response.

Don't sweat this one. My son was above grade level but there is a really broad range and kids don't know or care what level the other kids are at. His school seems to focus on sight words over phonics.

DC #1 didn't learn to read until the third grade. DC#2 was only 4 and learned to read when his 8 year old brother did.
DC#2 could read Harry Potter by the end of K. By the 8th grade, their MAP R scores were within the error of the test.
