It's a very challenging test (176 questions in 90 minutes for 8 and 9 year-olds) and I find it unfortunate that they have to weigh it so heavily in the selection process. In fact, I really wish they could do HGC type curriculum for all. We really want the kids to be taught academics to the right level IN school. Supplementing outside of school should be left for sports and arts and religion. |
| My child has loved 4th grade. They're doing a lot of cool stuff this year researching Native Americans, Age of Exploration, etc. And only 4 kids out of 60 went off to HGC so it's not like their friend group was broken apart. But then again I'm a parent who doesn't have any idea who is in my child's reading group. This to me is helicoptering. |
So your kid says to you, "While in Reading today Bob said to me, blah blah blah," and you run away screaming NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I can't have that information or I'm a helicopter parent? I mean God forbid we have a freaking conversation with our kid, huh? |
Yeah sure, that's just what I meant (?!). I meant that if you quiz your kids about which group they're in and who's in it and how it stacks up against the others, you're overdoing it to me. |
That is ridiculous. I know (roughly) who is in my child's reading group, and which level it is (at least, in her opinion), and I've never asked her. She tells me about it when I ask things about what books they're reading, what they do in reading group, how often they meet, has she made any new friends, etc. I also know who she sits next to and across from in class. Way more information than what I actually *care* about. |
The HGC curriculum in 4th grade is very demanding. Certainly some kids who aren't in the HGC could handle it but honestly the vast majority could not. |
