DD in Compact Math-- Can we choose not to do IM in middle school??

Anonymous
The most important question--really the ONLY question--is, does your child really understand the Math? Some years ago my DD was breezing through advanced math classes in MCPS, scoring well on report card. But we soon realized, she was just doing things by rote. She didn't really have any depth to her understanding. We had her repeat the geometry she had taken in middle school when she was a freshman in HS. it wasn't easy getting her schedule changed. We had to fight MCPS, including meeting one-on-one with the principal. The school wanted to tout the number of kids in advanced math classes. So, be careful. It's NOT so simple to get off the advanced math treadmill.

My daughter is very good in math (MAP-M 99%) took IM in 6th and struggled a bit (got high Bs mostly). She's in 7th now and breezing through Algebra; got an A on the county midterm. I get the feeling that IM is just a disjointed class that isn't taught very well. I wouldn't necessarily assume that struggles will continue.

This. DD managed to get a B in IM with a lot of extra help from me and nightly Khan Academy. Now in Algebra 1 she just does her homework and goes to see her math teacher during lunch about once a month and has had no problem maintaining an A.

OP - you also need to think about which math class your DD will be taking (w/ or w/o IM) in her Senior year when she applies to colleges.
