Arlington County Publics- Any Talk of Big Cuts, Especially Immersion?

I'm the poster with the bilingual kid who would enter at 3rd. She's completely biliterate- fluent in reading and writing in English and Spanish.

But it's ACPS, so there's that.

Haters, gonna hate, hate, hate

This a great school btw

APS issues these days aren't about cuts, they're about size and growth and where to put all these students. The Capital Improvement Plan review process is ongoing right now and I strongly urge you to get involved.

Schools in northern Arlington have been redistricted already, but many are still over-crowded. Southern Arlington schools are still to come. MS and HS are busting at the seams, and the plans just aren't there to alleviate the problems for at least 5-10yrs.

Visit the More Seats For More Students page on the apsva.us website to get informed of the issues.

Are you planning to call the principal? Sounds like a great fit to me!

Just understand that there's really no actual "choice" about Arlington's choice schools, including immersion. It's "luck."

its not "luck, it is location for immersion. if you are in bounds for key or claremont, you are in,

If you live in the Key boundary, you are definitely in. If you live in the Key zone (approx 1/2 of Arlington), you can lottery in. I have yet to hear that someone didn't get in who wanted to get in (wait lists move).

What about being in a "sister" zone - Taylor or Jamestown. Any special privilege to enter Key if you live there?

If you want this treatment, go private.

You are likely nuts and should stay off the internets!!! Some places give priority for living in the attendance zone, within proximity of it, or for already being a speaker of the target language. Does this apply to Key. Please only rational sane adults please answer. Thanks!

If you are in Taylor or Jamestown you will get into key. Key is substantially less competitive to get into than Claremont. This summer several families who were the on the Claremont waiting list were admitted to key. The entire key waiting list was admitted.

That's because they added a class at Key and took one away from Claremont to balance enrollment. Both schools are overcrowded, from what I understand, and nobody, other than those for whom Key is their neighborhood school, should bank on admittance in the coming years.

The whole ASFS/Key thing is mystifying to me.

I'm looking for a 3rd and 4th grade spot for two fluent speakers

Asfs and key ate the same neighborhood zone. If you live in that zone, you can pick between them. The rest of key spots are filled by lottery. 1/2 the count lotteries to key, the other 1/2 to Claremont.

How are spots for older grades? I'd need a 4th grade spot for a fluent speaker and a K spot for a fluent speaker. What are our chances?
