| Also, I keep hearing that before 2.0 it was a huge problem that too many kids were in advanced class. If that was such a huge issue then why are we going back to having more kids advanced. Makes no sense! |
As a possible explanation, how about: previously too many kids were accelerated, and now not enough kids are accelerated. Make sense now? Or even: that centralized system for assessing admission to compacted math was annoying, and we're going to get rid of it and leave it up to the schools. |
I should not have to talk to the principal to make sure my kid is getting properly challenged. If we want to talk about achievement gap this could be perfect example. A non English speaking parent is less likely to be tracking down the principal to discuss things like this. This is exactly why appropriate instruction needs to be the default, not something you have to fight for. Using the english as an example here. I would hate to see the math classes end up in the same boat. |
| They will only have compact math at BFES. |
It's the principal's decision. But if you don't want to talk to the principal on grounds that you shouldn't have to, then don't. |
| You missed the the point. This is an example. |
| I also heard from a friend at Beverly Farms that they will be the only school to have compact math next year. I'm really upset and contacting MCPS. |
Bit of a hyperbole, but if a MS kid is only reading at a 3rd grade level, they'd probably have a reading specialist or something. Every school is supposed to have at least a PT staff for "enrichment or accelerated" programming. Discuss with this person how they are going to meet your DC's needs. |
That is completely false - I know for a fact that our elementary school (not BFES) will have compacted math because it's causing even more overcrowding due to the need for an additional classroom devoted to Compacted Math. |
| If 12:14 is true, I will also email the main office. I am sick and tired of some schools like Beverlys Farms getting all of perks. |
12:14 is not true. It is also not true that the cafeteria at Somerset ES features handmade asparagus ravioli with artisanal ricotta cheese, served by butlers. You shouldn't believe everything you read on DCUM. |
LOL, PP, you fell for the BFES troll.
|
| I blame Boosterthon for all of the compact math problems |
| Word at the MCCPTA delegates assembly in February was that compacted math hosted in Middle Schools for 5th graders would be going away, and that, for the moment, compacted math would stay in elementary schools if there were enough kids and the principals wanted it in their elementary schools. Word was also that Bowers wanted to get rid of it entirely. |
since Bowers is out now, and we have a new person in, wonder what will happen? I *really* can't see them doing away with it. There was so much uproar. I could see them doing something like it at every home school, but how that gets implemented I think is the big question. |
