Or, "normal" people don't/can't pay enough to persuade a dr. to do it? |
No, it is offered to average folks (like me). It has to do with the PGD testing (i.e., chromosomal testing). Many people who have done the testing have had repeated IVF failures or repeated losses. It's used to find healthy embryos and increases the chances of success. CCRM recommended it for me. I don't know of any clinics that would do it solely for sex selection. |

It's sex, not gender.
|
| This happened for a friend of mine who had twin boys through IVF. When she asked the doc if, given the option, he could pick the female embryo for the next IVF round, he agreed, but it was all on the DL. I think it's perfectly fine in situations where doctors are selecting embryos anyhow. |
OFFS.

Yes this. We had to have testing done for other reasons, and one of the results of the testing is that they know the gender. My clinic also does not allow for sex selection, but if the information is known and it comes down to picking among equally well developed blasts with which to try for implantation, then you may be given the choice. You might also decide based on which blastocyst looks better, how many you want to put in, etc... Gender would be only one factor. |
| Eww. Never could stand her. |
The option is out there. |

I don't know the rest of their story, but I don't get the impression that IVF was done just to select the sex.
Based on what other posters have said, this is not abnormal for certain IVF situations. If i'd had to do IVF to have my second and went through the chromosomal testing, I might have selected a boy. I got a second girl on my own, and I'm totally thrilled and in love with her. Given the option, though, knowing she is 99.9% my last child, I probably would have gone the opposite direction. |
Some clinics, like Shady Grove Fertility, do not allow people to do this. |
No. It is gender. |
| I picked the gender of my third. I didn't know you got that choice during IVF so it was like a little surprise along the way. I didnt realize how EXTREMELY controversial it was until I casually mentioned it a few times here and there and then I shut my mouth for good about it. Its just one of those things people really get angry about. |
Shady Grove chooses for you. |
Quick lesson for you... Sex refers to the biological and physiological characteristics, while gender refers to behaviors, roles, expectations, and activities in society. Sex refers to male or female, while gender refers to masculine or feminine. |
|
Let's all start doing it.
I mean, why not? What could possibly go wrong? |
