Passport never delivered! USPS rant.

OP here- update!

USPS tracer shows that it was delivered to my neighbor across the street. They are at work, so we will check with them tonight.

This is not very encouraging news. They are very friendly and neighborly people, certainly the type I would expect to walk a misdirected piece of mail over. My only hope is that maybe they do not deal with their mail promptly, and it's sitting in a pile on the back corner of a desk.

This is what happened to us. We get along very well with our neighbors but they were out of town then really busy, and didn't have a chance to bring over some mail that was misdelivered. It was in a stack they thoguht was junk mail in our case.

We had a neighbor whose mail was correctly addressed to her mom--who had a different name. The neighbor who got it instead threw it away.......

This is scary. Who knows who has these passports.

OP here. Well, the neighbors know nothing about it. I have to figure out my best course of action tomorrow.

OP here- update for any of those interested. I ended up having to have the passport canceled by the State Department. They reissued it, and sent it to me by UPS with signature required. It was just delivered this morning, so we will be able to go on our trip! So kudos for the passport agency, and jeers for USPS!

I do this. I collect mail all week but don't usually look at it until the weekend -- or even the following week.
