| I love these shows - fresh off the boat, blackish, the goldbergs. I don't watch any of them with my kids, though, because I'm not sure how to explain to them the many jokes based on racial/cultural stereotypes and why that is okay in a sitcom but not okay for them to make thise jokes in real life. I would love to get people's thoughts on that. I am not a troll (I'm jewish and I relate to many of the jokes in the Goldbergs based on my own family experiences, although I have moments of relating to all 3 shows!)- I truly struggle with how to discuss it with my kids. |
| How old are your kids? This hasn't been a problem for us so wondering if your kids are younger. |
| My kids are 9 and 11. |
| Funny- mine are too! It's not a problem though I am the one who avoids Blackish (more bc of the sex references though). I think they get the difference. That has not been a problem at all. They get that the kids in Fresh off the Boat are a tiny minority in 90s Orlando. For the Goldbergs they get that it's that particular family (mother is an exaggeration, etc). |

Personally I find FOB offensive and stupid. Maybe offensively stupid.
Love Blackish, though. That and Jane the Virgin are the best sitcoms going right now. |
Interesting. The real Eddie has his son playing him and it's based on his real life experiences. So, if his life offends you, then so be it. We love it and Dr. Ken and think it's great to see Asians shown in a positive light and not as some goofy side kick with a silly accent. |

Seen one or two episodes and wasn't super impressed. But now I'm thinking I might check it out again.
And I'm loving how many people here like Blackish. I think that show is hysterical. |
Eddie is played by Hudson Yang who is of no relation to Eddie Huang. Also, as of season 2, Eddie Huang has very limited involvement with the show. |

I think like FOB and Blackish in general but find the composition of actors/actresses that are cast as family members are don't mesh well together and it's hard to buy into them as family. The Goldbergs and The Middle have much better dynamics in that sense.
The kids on Blackish don't act like siblings and there is very little cohesion in the writing and scenes. They could recast all the kids with the exception of Diane and it wouldn't really matter. FOB - I really like Jessica's characters personality. |
| My hapa son loves FOB. Randall Park's dad character is his role model right now. |
| I love the dad on FOB, too. He reminds me of Phil from Modern Family - goofy and funny but so heart-warming, and provides a great counterpoint to the tough mother figure in each show (although the actress who plays the mother in FOB is head and shoulders above Julie Bowen in MF). |
I live in official fear of turning into Bev Goldberg after having a child. Have they discussed on Blackish the fact that the twins are named Jack and Diane? It took me almost the whole first season to figure it out... |
| Blackish is a good show to watch with kids because it does deal head on with all of the stuff we aren't supposed to talk about. |
| I'm the poster who said I love these shows- they are hilarious - but don't watch with my kids because I don't know how to explain the "inside jokes." In this past week's episode, the parents called the grade of B minus a "chinese F." I know my kids would ask what that means. What would I say - chinese people have a reputation of having high academic standards? Why would it be okay to say that? That's my trouble in watching the shows with my kids - to explain the jokes to them, I basically have to endorse racial/cultural stereotypes. |
